All my pieces are entirely handmade. I begin with 4" ceramic tiles, score and break them with a handheld tile cutter, then nip them "down to size" with tile nippers. Most pieces are composed of very small bits of tile - around 12 to 15 pieces per square inch in the completed artwork.
I often use a rotary tool to make figures, faces, and larger elements, then mosaic the backgrounds using various tile shapes (diamonds, teardrops, honeycombs). “Young Lincoln” (sold) is a good example; his face and body were cut into interlocking pieces with a rotary tool, and he is surrounded by teardrops. “Red Dirt Horses” has tiny, fragmented pieces, like the red dust they are kicking up.
I don't glue down pieces as I go; everything is loose until the entire image is complete. This is a somewhat non-traditional method, but gives me great flexibility as the mosaic grows.
